Building tiny homes with a big Impact in the Woodstock community
WALLTITE® spray foam insulation offers warmth for the city’s homeless community
Homelessness is a pressing human rights issue worldwide. More than 235,000 people in Canada experience homelessness in any given year, and 25,000 to 35,000 people experience homelessness each night. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the problem through several compounding effects, including increased unemployment and eviction rates. Meanwhile, outbreaks in shelters have forced them to implement stricter capacity limits, and some individuals do not feel safe taking refuge in the overcrowded facilities.
Helping those suffering from homelessness is more important than ever. Governments, non-profits and communities are all having to think beyond the usual solutions to create safe and comfortable spaces for those who are seeking a temporary residence.
The Woodstock Tiny Homes Community is an initiative that aims to help bridge the housing gap for those experiencing homelessness in Woodstock, Ontario. Spearheaded by Woodstock-Oxford Rotary, the initiative provides urgently needed transitional housing that is insulated and safe, providing life-saving shelter for those in need until they can find a more permanent home.
BASF and Great Northern Insulation (GNI) have joined forces to insulate the initial group of tiny home builds. With BASF supplying their WALLTITE® spray foam insulation and GNI providing their installation expertise, the spaces will have added warmth and energy efficiency. Each home is 100 square feet with two windows and a door, furnished with a bed, chair, and table, and equipped with partially solar-powered electricity and heat.
“It’s always great when we can collaborate with a company like BASF to support a worthwhile project like Tiny Homes,” says Bill Maginas, CEO at Great Northern Insulation. “We're proud to support such an important initiative and help build more energy-efficient and sustainable communities for everyone.”
More tiny homes like those in Woodstock are being constructed by local governments across North America as a cost-effective and immediate means to provide homeless people with safe, warm shelters.
