Concept shelf “OTTO” pioneers sustainable furniture design with plastics
High-performance plastics offer enormous advantages in making furniture more sustainable: they combine strength and durability with low weight, can be used in a variety of ways and, thanks to alternative raw materials, can contribute significantly to reducing the carbon footprint. BASF is now demonstrating all this together with the award-winning Spanish design studio Inma Bermúdez in a surprising application: the heavy-duty shelf OTTO. All plastic elements are made of just one material, which allows for easy recycling.
Inma Bermúdez and her partner Moritz Krefter drew their inspiration for the design of OTTO from architecture, specifically bridge construction. To turn this inspiration into reality, they found support from the team at the BASF Creation Center in Ludwigshafen.
From inspiration to prototype in the BASF Creation Center
How does the BASF Creation Center support?
Eva Höfli shares how the industrial designers, material and simulation experts at the BASF Creation Center accompany customers on the path from design inspiration to design solution.
Finding the perfect material for your design
You’d like to create an unusual design like OTTO but aren’t sure which materials to use? In this case, BASF creation engineer Tim Diehlmann is here to support you.
Simulation ensures that design matches functions
OTTO’s design is not only sophisticated, it’s also highly functional: OTTO can carry a load of up to 100 kg per shelf. How to make sure that the design matches the desired function? This is what Diego d'Aulignac, simulation engineer at BASF Creation Center, is helping with.
