… that BASF owns a solar park in Germany?

In 2022, BASF and enviaM inaugurated a solar power plant in Schwarzheide. With an expected electricity production of 25 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year, the plant is the first major solar power plant worldwide that BASF realized with a partner. On an annual average, the solar park will cover about 10 percent of the current electricity demand of the BASF production site in Schwarzheide.

In 2023, BASF, Vattenfall, and Allianz jointly inaugurated the wind farm Hollandse Kust Zuid, which is one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world. Around half of the electricity produced will be used to reduce the carbon footprint of our products at European BASF sites and to power innovative, low-emission technologies. In addition, Vattenfall and BASF signed a purchase agreement in 2024 for 49 percent of Germany’s Nordlicht offshore wind farms.

The new Zhanjiang Verbund site in China will be BASF’s largest investment with up to €10 billion upon completion. The company is aiming at 100% green power supply for the new site which will be the company’s third largest Verbund site worldwide.

To transform the chemical production, large quantities of electrical energy from renewable sources need to be available at competitive prices. That is why BASF acts and pursues a make and buy strategy: We invest in own energy production plants to meet our energy demand and we purchase renewable energy through long-term supply agreements.

Solar Energy

Advancements in technology have made solar energy more efficient and cost-effective than ever before.
