How to support circular economy with biopolymers

BASF has been researching biodegradable, bio-based and certified compostable biopolymers for more than 30 years. Bioplastics do not substitute conventional plastics but complement them as special materials: They offer new properties and application possibilities while having environmental benefits.

Biopolymers like BASF’s ecoflex^® (PBAT) and the compound ecovio^®make an important contribution to circular economy by increasing organic recycling and closing the loop of the food value chain.

What do Polyurethanes, Thermopolyurethanes and Foams improve?

Polyurethane solutions improve insulation for buildings and household appliances, light-weight design for cars and other consumer products, conserving energy while increasing comfort and safety. This product group includes PU (polyurethane) systems, TPU (thermoplastic polyurethanes or Elastollan^®) and MPU (microcellular polyurethane or Cellasto^®) as well as the particle foam Infinergy^®based on E-TPU (expanded thermoplastics polyurethane) and Basotect^®, the flexible open cell foam made from melamine resin for sound absorption in many industries.

While mechanical recycling should be used for anything that can be recycled this way, ...the goal must be to recycle more plastics, burn less, and transfer less to landfills. We believe that there will be further improvement in recycling processes, not only chemical processes, but also mechanical ones. The optimal result can clearly be achieved from a combination of both.
