Driving the future of eMobility: Ultramid® Advanced N powers high-voltage connectors

In electric mobility, every component counts. As vehicles become more electrified, the demands on materials used in high-voltage (HV) connectors grow. Enter Ultramid® Advanced N3U42G6 – BASF’s latest polyphthalamide (PPA), designed to meet the challenges of modern electric and electronic (E&E) applications.

Powering Protection: Non-halogenated flame retardant for low electro-corrosion

Part of BASF’s PPA portfolio, this new grade is a PA9T that combines a non-halogenated flame retardant with exceptional mechanical and thermal performance. It reduces electro-corrosion in metal contacts – a failure point in HV connectors – especially under humid and high-temperature conditions. With UL94 V-0 flame retardancy at 0.25 mm, Ultramid® Advanced N3U42G6 ensures that safety is never compromised, even in thin-walled connectors.

Durable color solution for HV connectors

Color coding is essential in high-voltage systems, and BASF’s new PPA delivers here, too. Available in pre-colored versions like the industry-standard orange RAL 2003, or with UL-certified masterbatches, the material offers long-term color stability – even after 1,000 hours at up to 150°C. For self-coloring, more than 50 inorganic and organic colorants, which are approved for coloring PPAs and show a heat stability up to 350°C, can be used.

Miniaturization meets strength in HV connector by Kostal Kontakt Systeme

Automotive supplier KOSTAL Kontakt Systeme is among the first to adopt Ultramid® Advanced N3U42G6 in several components in its KS22 Class 4 HV connector – the smallest in its performance class by Kostal.  Thanks to the material’s excellent flowability and high elongation at break KOSTAL’s connectors achieve miniaturization without compromising strength or electrical insulation.

Engineered for surface mount technology: High heat resistance, low moisture uptake

Ultramid® Advanced N3U42G6 is not just about performance today – it’s about the next generation of electronics. Due to its low moisture uptake and high heat distortion temperature of 265°C, the PA9T is especially suited for connectors post-processed with surface mount technology (SMT): It guarantees high dimensional stability and avoids blistering or changes in dimensions of the processed part during the SMT process. The result? Higher quality parts, less waste, and lower costs.

Elevate your E&E innovation with advanced materials

Discover how Ultramid® Advanced N3U42G6 can elevate your E&E designs. Whether you're developing the next innovation in electric mobility or looking to enhance the safety and efficiency of other E&E components, BASF’s PPAs are here to help.
