Full REDcert² Certification in Europe

On September 15, 2025,BASF Performance Materials has reached a significant milestone in its sustainability journey: all ten of its European production sites are now certified according to the REDcert² scheme. This achievement follows its earlier transition to renewable electricity across Europe in January 2025, further solidifying BASF’s commitment to sustainable and circular solutions in the plastics industry.

What Does REDcert² Certification Mean?

REDcert² is a recognized certification scheme that verifies the use of sustainable feedstocks in the chemical industry. For BASF Performance Materials, this means that engineering plastics, polyurethanes, thermoplastic polyurethanes, and specialty polymers produced at its European sites can now be offered to customers as certified mass balance solutions. The certification covers the entire portfolio, ensuring that alternative raw materials, such as renewable or recycled feedstocks, are introduced at the earliest stage of production and attributed to final products through a transparent mass balance approach.

A Step Forward in Sustainable Plastics

With the recent certification of its polyurethane production site in Malacky, Slovakia, BASF Performance Materials can now offer certified sustainable materials from all its European plants. This move supports customers in sectors like transportation, consumer goods, industrial applications, and construction, helping them meet their own sustainability goals.

At BASF, we do not only talk about ideas; but we also deliver proof points. This certification is another milestone on #OurPlasticsJourney, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and circularity in plastics. With that, we are ready to meet our customers’ needs in sustainable solutions today and tomorrow.
