BASF and Siemens – A Sustainable Breakthrough with 3RV2 circuit breaker
Challenge: Reducing Carbon Footprint in Critical Industrial Applications
At BASF, our mission has always been to create chemistry for a sustainable future. We understand that transitioning to a circular economy is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. This challenge is even more significant in industries that rely heavily on high-performance materials, such as electrical safety components used in industrial settings. These products must maintain the highest levels of durability and safety, while also minimizing their environmental impact.
When Siemens approached us with the goal of replacing fossil-based plastics in their widely used SIRIUS 3RV2 circuit breakers, we recognized both the complexity and the opportunity. How could we deliver a solution that met Siemens' stringent performance standards while contributing to their decarbonization goals? The task at hand was not just about replacing materials—it was about pioneering a shift towards a truly sustainable production model in a critical application.
Solution: Introducing Biomass-Balanced Plastics with BASF’s Ultramid® BMBcertTM and Ultradur® BMBcertTM
Together with Siemens, we identified the perfect application for our Ultramid® BMBcertTM and Ultradur® BMBcertTM materials, made using the biomass balance approach. This innovative method allows us to replace fossil feedstock with renewable raw materials, such as biomethane derived from recycled agricultural waste, at the very start of the production process. The result? High-performance plastics that deliver the same reliability and quality as conventional materials, but with a significantly reduced carbon footprint.
Through our mass balance approach, we ensure that renewable and recycled materials are fed into our production network, allowing customers like Siemens to reduce their reliance on fossil resources. This process is certified through systems such as ISCC PLUS and REDcert, ensuring that the materials we provide meet the highest sustainability standards. The application of these materials in Siemens' SIRIUS 3RV2 circuit breaker is a groundbreaking example of how sustainable chemistry can drive real-world solutions.
Results: Cutting Emissions and Boosting Sustainability
The impact of this collaboration speaks for itself. By integrating our biomass-balanced plastics into the production of the SIRIUS 3RV2 circuit breaker, Siemens will reduce the emission of carbon dioxide equivalents by approximately 270 tons per year1.
But the benefits don’t stop there. Siemens’ circuit breakers, now made with our sustainable plastics, continue to deliver the same outstanding performance and safety that customers around the world depend on. From protecting motors in industrial plants to preventing electrical fires in critical infrastructure, the SIRIUS 3RV2 plays an essential role in safeguarding machines and people alike—all while contributing to a greener, more sustainable future.
Even better, these circuit breakers received the Siemens EcoTech label, a mark of excellence for products that meet stringent environmental criteria. In addition to the material innovation, these products consume less power over their lifecycle, adding another layer of efficiency and sustainability.
