Lower your CO - keep your process:
Autofroth® BMB foam systems for low‑pressure PU

Meet Autofroth® BMB: biomass balance foam systems that can reduce product carbon footprint by ~18–20% compared to BASF conventional polyurethane foam systems - without reformulation or process changes. Keep your low‑pressure setup and performance, lower the PCF, and back your claims with REDcert² mass‑balance certification and ISO 14067:2018 PCF methodology.

Why it matters? Drop-In!

North American manufacturers in appliance, construction, and marine can now choose a drop‑in BMB option to lower CO₂, while retaining the same specifications and processing characteristics as their fossil‑based counterparts for a hassle‑free replacement.

How the biomass balance (BMB) approach works

BASF replaces a share of fossil raw materials with renewable feedstock at the beginning of the value chain and attributes it to specific products via a third‑party‑certified mass balance method (REDcert²). You receive a product that is chemically identical to its conventional twin while attributing renewable content upstream, enabling PCF reductions without a process change.

BMB variants deliver the same processing window and performance envelope with a lower PCF profile.

Certification & sites

Autofroth® BMB products are REDcert² certified, along with multiple BASF sites -including our Clemson, South Carolina site - supporting credible documentation for your sustainability reporting.

Autofroth systems are also produced using renewable electricity sourced from wind and solar power, supported in part through Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (VPPAs). By addressing electricity‑related (Scope 2) emissions in manufacturing, Autofroth systems support lower‑carbon, higher‑performance polyurethane systems.

More to REDcert2:

REDcert2 is a sustainability certification scheme for the use of sustainable biomass as raw material in the chemical industry. A certification according to these certification schemes confirms that the biomass used is sustainable and has been fed into the production system in the required amount. It also confirms that the sustainable biomass has been correctly attributed to the corresponding sales products. The certifications are awarded on the basis of on-site audits conducted by independent auditors.

Technical Footnotes & References

Biomass Balance Method (BMB)

Biomass balance method (BMB): Fossil raw materials required for the manufacture of BASF products are replaced with renewable feedstock along the integrated production chain. The corresponding share of renewable material is attributed to the specific sales product via a certified mass balance approach. Production methods of this kind save fossil resources and reduce CO2 emissions at the same time. Renewable feedstock is not traceable in the BASF product.

Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Methodology – ISO 14067:2018

The product carbon footprint (PCF) calculations follow the requirements and guidance given by ISO 14067:2018. Actual reduction potential (approx. 18–20%) varies based on grade, application, and system configuration.

FAQ

  • How much CO can I save with Autofroth® BMB?
Potentially ~18-20% lower PCF vs. BASF conventional PU foam systems, depending on grade and application. We’ll quantify your case with project data.

  • Do I need to change my equipment or parameters?
No. Customers can scale up without reformulation or process changes; specifications and processing characteristics mirror fossil‑based systems.

  • Is it certified?
Yes. REDcert² mass‑balance certification, with Clemson, SC among the certified sites; PCF follows ISO 14067:2018.
Note:    Figures are application‑specific; “potential” reductions reflect current BASF PI guidance. PCF calculations per ISO 14067:2018.
