BASOTECT® C
FOR DURABLE INSULATION OF CRYOGENIC EQUIPMENT

BASOTECT® C
FOR DURABLE INSULATION OF CRYOGENIC EQUIPMENT

BASF has developed a new grade of its melamine resin foam Basotect®: It is called Basotect® C – a cold-flexible foam for durable and energy-efficient insulation of cryogenic applications. Its unique property profile makes it the material of choice to insulate LOX, LIN and LNG pipes, tanks and gas treatment machinery:

Basotect® C Pipes

Very good insulation up to -196°C

• Outstanding flexibility even at very low temperatures

• Very good dimensional stability at changing temperatures

• Excellent flame retardance (B1 according to DIN 4102)

• Easy and tight installation with vapor barriers

Constant mechanical properties over a wide temperature range – and so a reliable alternative to commonly used materials for insulating gas treatment plants of liquid oxygen, nitrogen and natural gas.

This unique insulation foam for cryogenic applications by BASF helps to ensure tightness, energy efficiency, durability and safety for the treatment, storage and transport of liquefied gases!

UNIQUE PROPERTIES OF OF COLD-FLEXIBLE BASOTECT® C
FOR LNG, LIN AND LOX SYSTEMS

Treatment, storage and transport of liquefied gases such as oxygen (LOX), nitrogen (LIN) and natural gas (LNG) require a high-performance insulation system. Basotect® C’s unique benefits for cryogenic insulation have been tested acc. to different national and international standards resulting in excellent values for insulation, thermal conductivity, cryoflexibility, LOX suitability and moisture tightness in combination with vapor barriers.

Properties of Basotect® C according to testing:

SAFE AND EASY INSTALLATION
OF CRYOGENIC INSULATION WITH BASOTECT®

Basotect® C offers considerable advantages in installation compared to materials so far used in very low temperature insulation. Plant operators benefit from its easy and tight mounting – and plant safety is ensured by Basotect® C’s excellent flame retardance (B1 according to DIN 4102) and compliance to ISO 21010 for the use in LOX systems.

Basotect® C Insulation

Typical set-up of insulation with Basotect® C:

  • When designing and installing cryogenic insulation, special attention has to be paid to a tight and durable set-up to ensure thermal, mechanical and chemical resistance of the insulation system, thus preventing condensation, icing and unwanted temperature fluctuations. Usually, multi-layer systems are used which consist of foams or cellular glass as well as protective layers and vapor barriers.
  • Generally, insulating elements made of Basotect® C must be prefabricated in such a way that they can follow the contours of the surfaces to be insulated. They are to be fitted with all joints properly sealed.
  • Cryogenic insulation elements with Basotect® C must be installed in such a way that they always have offset joints over multiple layers. A vapor barrier is to be provided on every layer.

Additional information is available in the AGI working document Q 141, “Insulation materials for industrial installations – melamine resin foam”.

The AGI working document is a German standard well-known in the global construction industry for insulation materials, giving guidance for the design of insulation systems based on specific materials.
