Ultrason® (PSU, PESU, PPSU) – The Specialty Plastic for High-quality Parts

Ultrason® is especially designed for applications that require high heat resistance ‒ it always keeps stiffness and dimensional stability even when used at very high temperatures. Its extraordinary property profile allows all Ultrason® grades to be molded into high-quality, highly stressed parts for high-performance applications in a lot of industries.

Ultrason® E, S, P (PESU, PSU, PPSU)

The Ultrason® resins are amorphous thermoplastics derived from polyethersulfone (PESU), polysulfone (PSU) and polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) and offer very high resistance to heat. Their wide spectrum of beneficial properties allows them to be molded into high-quality parts for household and catering gear, membrane filtration, automotive as well as E&E applications. They can be processed by almost all the techniques adopted for thermoplastics.

Ultrason® can be successfully used for applications in which other plastics, e. g. polyamide, polycarbonate, polyoxymethylene and polyalkylene terephthalates, fail to meet the requirements. By virtue of their extraordinary versatility, Ultrason® resins can substitute thermosets, metals and ceramics in a lot of industries.

The key features of Ultrason® are:

  • Temperature-independent properties
  • Very high long-term service temperatures
  • Good dimensional stability
  • Excellent stiffness
  • Very good mechanical strength
  • High transparency: honey-colored tint
  • Good electrical insulation properties
  • Favorable dielectric properties
  • Very good fire behavior
  • Excellent hydrolysis and chemical resistance

Stylish, durable and safe: Ultrason® for household and catering

The demands on household appliances and catering gear are manifold and uncompromising at the same time: They have to be stylish as well as durable, they should be easy as well as safe in usage and they have to comply to legal regulations.

Materials to be employed in this kind of applications have to fulfill several requirements at once: excellent mechanical stability, high long-term service temperatures in hot or cold environments, sustained resistance to food and chemicals as well as approval for food contact.

With its Ultrason® portfolio, BASF offers the ideal material for stylish, durable and safe applications in the catering and household sectors. The main advantage of Ultrason® compared to other transparent polymers used for household applications: due its polymer character the mechanical properties remain high and unaffected over a wide temperature range!

The temperature resistance of Ultrason® is much higher than that of PA12 and co-polyesters: the glass transition temperature of PA12 is < 160°, that of co-polyesters < 130 °C; whereas the glass transition temperatures of Ultrason® grades are 223 °C and 225 °C.

For unlimited application possibilities:

Ultrason® can be used for a variety of applications like:

•  Household appliances

•  Bottles for adults and babies

•  Microwavable dishes

•  Catering gear: high-heat pans, reusable trays and bowls

•  Non-stick coating
