Scaling up of Green Hydrogen Production

Stargate Hydrogen and BASF’s Ultrason®: Advancing Green Hydrogen Production

Stargate Hydrogen, an Estonian electrolyzer manufacturer, is setting new standards in green hydrogen production by adopting BASF’s high-performance thermoplastic, Ultrason® S, for the frames in its Stellar series alkaline water electrolyzer (AWE) stacks.

Plastics for Electrolyzer Design

Traditionally, electrolyzer frames have relied on metals like nickel. Stargate Hydrogen’s using Ultrason® S marks a significant advancement. This high-performance plastic is:

✓ Much lighter than metal, making the stacks easier to handle and install.

✓ Extremely durable, able to withstand high temperatures and tough chemical environments.

✓ Flexible in design, because it can be injection-molded, which allows for functional integration.

By relying on Ultrason® S, Stargate Hydrogen’s stacks last longer, require less maintenance, and help make hydrogen production more reliable and affordable. This is important for industries like transport, steel, and chemicals that are looking for ways to reduce their carbon emissions.

Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate Hydrogen, explains:

We deliver not only a piece of hardware but a partnership from day one until hydrogen is being produced reliably. We build upon the best aspects of AWE technology and complement it with breakthrough materials. This is why we chose BASF’s Ultrason® for the frames in our Stellar electrolyzer series: it combines light weight with outstanding performance, thus helping us to improve the efficiency and lower the cost of alkaline electrolyzers.

BASF’s Ultrason® portfolio is designed to meet the needs of different types of electrolyzers, supporting the move to clean energy. Stargate Hydrogen’s new stacks are part of a new class of electrolyzers that can help decarbonize major industries.
