The new hydrophilic Ultramid® H

Dialogue of a case study with Podanfol, a market leader in artificial sausage casings

The thermoplastic polyamide Ultramid® H developed by BASF will be presented to the public for the first time at K 2025.

In addition to the inherent strength of polyamides, the material has an extraordinary water permeation. The combination of both properties enables water separation in very thin-walled films or under high pressure.

A prime example is sausage production, where the meat is often enclosed by an artificial casing. The sausage is sometimes smoked and usually also dried during preparation. Polyamides have not yet been able to allow smoke into the artificial casing or water out of it. Due to its water permeability and strength, Ultramid® H enables both processes, smoking and drying, in very thin-walled casings.

We discuss the advantages of Ultramid® H in the production of smokable sausage casings with Podanfol, a market leader in artificial casings.
